Jesus Refutes Rabbinical Interpretation of Psalm 118:22

Reflection

Jewish Rabbis interpreted Psalm 118:22 to be referring to David. But Jesus corrected the erroneous interpretation.

Psalm 118:22 refers to Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Psalm 118:22-23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the [a]chief corner stone. 23 This is from the LORD and is His doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.(A)

Footnotes:
a. Psalm 118:22 This refers either to the prominent stone at the top of a corner tower, or perhaps more likely to the stone at the foundation of a corner, the first stone laid for a structure (cf Eph 2:20). The special significance of the latter is that the shape of its sides determined how the walls were laid out. The verse refers prophetically to Jesus the Messiah (see Matt 21:42 etc.), but the ancient rabbis interpreted it as a reference to David, who started as a humble shepherd, not the background one would expect for a king. Some prophetic passages refer to an event in the past that is a precursor or foreshadowing of the future prophetic event.

Matthew 22:41-45 Amplified Bible (AMP)
41 Now while the Pharisees were [still] gathered together, Jesus asked them a question:(A)

42 “What do you [Pharisees] think of the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)? Whose Son is He?”

They said to Him,

 “[a]The son of David.”

 43 Jesus asked them,

“How is it then that David by the inspiration of the Spirit, calls Him ‘Lord,’ saying, 44

‘THE LORD (the Father) SAID TO MY LORD (the Son, the Messiah),

“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES UNDER YOUR FEET”’?(B)

45 So then, if David calls Him (the Son, the Messiah) ‘Lord,’ [b]how is He David’s son?”

Footnotes:
a. Matthew 22:42 The Pharisees may have thought of the Messiah merely as a human descendant of David.
b. Matthew 22:45 See note Mark 12:35.
