According to Genesis 11:3, “they used brick instead of stone.”
Stone points to Jesus as the Chief Cornerstone while brick refers to human efforts.
Brick is composed of clay which is a stiff, sticky, fine-grained earth, and humans were created from earth (soil).
The typology of tar and mortar.
It was also mentioned that tar was used for mortar.
Tar is a dark brown or black bituminous, usually odorous, viscous liquid obtained by destructive distillation of organic material. The odorous and destructive aspects of tar points to salvation by human efforts.
God described that as soiled sanitary pads (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 10:3).
Mortar is a workable paste used to bind building blocks. It comes from a Latin Word "mortarium" meaning crushed.
The crushing speaks of Christ crucified as the solid foundation for salvation.
In a nutshell, the attempt to build the Tower of Babel was a rejection of Christ Jesus as the basis for salvation.
