A Type of Jesus - Jabez

Isaiah 53:3 reminds me of Jabez which means “sorrow”. He was characterized by pain.  Jabez was mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:10 against the backdrop of the genealogy of Judah’s descendants. Then out of nowhere, he was suddenly honoured by God.

The impression was that of a man who shot to prominence among a sea of people. It is like a photo of a blurry crowd and Jabez was the focus. The table serves to support the notion that Jabez was a type of Jesus.

Jabez was more honorable than all his brothers, Judah’s descendants. That points to Jesus as the Lion of Judah. He was the most honorable man of Israel.

Jabez means sorrow. Jesus was a “Man of sorrows”. He was acquainted or familiar with pain.

Jabez cried out to God for blessings and his request was granted. On the cross, Jesus cried out to God a second time and then gave up His spirit willingly. It was a cry of victory!

It is stated in Matthew 27:50 that Jesus dismissed His spirit. It is like a Commanding Officer ordering his subordinate to fall out. I believe the centurion saw that authority in and of Jesus (Matthew 8:8-10).

Jesus had the authority to dismiss and take up His spirit at will (John 10:18).

Jesus was not murdered. He willingly gave up His life in accordance with God’s salvation plan (John 10:11, Hebrews 10:5).

That was authority of the highest order!
