The three typologies in Zechariah 3:9. They are:

1. Set the stone before Joshua;
2. Engrave an inscription on the stone; and
3. Remove wickedness of the land in a single day.

1. Set the stone before Joshua
Stone typifies the Law (2 Corinthians 3:3;7). The Law is holy, just and good (Romans 7:12).

Joshua is the Hebrew equivalent of Jesus.

So, God, the Supreme Divine Judge, set the Law before Jesus.

In other words, He brought the charges for our sins against Him.

Jesus was made sin (2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 8:3).

He was charged for the crimes we committed.

2. Engrave an inscription on the stone
God canceled the certificate of debt and wiped out the charges against us (Colossians 2:14-15, Romans 10:4)

God wrote the Law on two stone tablets with His finger and canceled the charges against us on the Cross with the precious Blood of Jesus (Exodus 31:18, Deuteronomy 9:10).

Christ crucified crossed out (X) the Law!

This brings to mind the account of Jesus writing on the ground twice when the Pharisees brought the adulterous woman before Him for judgment (John 8:6-8). It was as though Jesus was saying, “I wrote the Law and now I have the authority to cancel it.”

The Pharisees were hoping to find grounds to accuse Jesus. But Jesus wrote on the ground twice. Jesus Himself is the ground (basis, reason) for all things. He was the ground or basis for the Old Covenant and He is also the ground or basis for the New Covenant.

Without Jesus, not even one thing was made, including the Covenants (John 1:3). Barry Manilow wrote the song. But God wrote the Law!

Pilate wrote an inscription on the Cross: “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” (John 19:19-22). It was as though he pointed to the victory of Jesus over sin and thus making Him the King.

What Pilate said in John 19:22 reminded me of how Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness temptation (Matthew 4:4, Luke 4:4).

God the Father has made God the Son as Jesus the Man to be the heir and lawful owner of all things (Hebrews 1:2).

3. Remove wickedness of the land in a single day
Jesus was punished for our sins on the Cross (2 Corinthians 5:21, Colossians 2:14-15; Hebrews 10:5-7; 11-12).

Jesus was crucified at 9 a.m. and died at 3 p.m. (Mark 15:25; 33-34). He paid our sin debts in full within that span of time (John 19:30). Hence, Christ crucified removed wickedness in a single day. He was executed to execute justice in the land.

The Old Testament sacrificial system was a type of Christ crucified.

Under that system, there were two daily sacrifices; one at 9 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m. It was a type of Christ crucified.

This also brings to mind the prophecy in Isaiah 66:8 and Ezekiel 37:21-22.

Israel became a recognized nation, actually “born in one day.” After being away from their homeland for almost 2,000 years, the Jews were given a national homeland in Palestine by the Balfour Declaration in November 1917.

In 1922, the League of Nations gave Great Britain the mandate over Palestine.

On May 14, 1948, Great Britain withdrew her mandate and immediately Israel was declared a sovereign state. Her growth and importance among nations were astonishing.

Never in the history of the world had such a thing happened before—but God keeps His word.

Steady lah! This is a quintessential Singlish expression that is used for affirmation.
