It is the same as asking how God acquits a sinner from criminal charges.

A sinner is one who has been proven to be guilty (Romans 3:10; 23).

Christ crucified is God’s standard for righteousness. The way to receive this gift of God is to take God’s Word for it through our spoken confession; I believe Jesus died to make me righteous (Romans 1:17, Romans 3:24).

We have been made righteous in Christ. Christ crucified has exonerated us from the penalties of our crimes when we receive Him as our “scapegoat”, so to speak. This righteousness of God is a gift from God Himself to be received through Christ Jesus (Romans 5:17; 9:30-31).

The plumb line is, therefore, a picture of God’s righteousness; Christ crucified.

The serpent vis-à-vis Satan was cursed to eat dust all the days of his life (Genesis 3:14).

Dust represents all the pains and sorrows of this world.

When Adam, and hence mankind thereafter, subjected himself to Satan, he put himself and the human race under the same curse.

Sin is missing the mark to live under the beggarly principle of “Dog eat dog and the survival of the fittest” (Proverbs 19:2, Galatians 4:9). It is the motto for the world we live in.

God did not mean for us to live that way.

Today, the motto for believers is: The Lord is our Righteousness.

The blessings of the Lord fall on the head of the righteous and the blessings of the Lord maketh rich but addeth no sorrows (Proverbs 10:6, Proverbs 10:22).

Worldly success entails trade-offs or opportunity costs, a concept that I learned from economics lessons during my junior college days. Opportunity cost is a phenomenon of scarcity; a city that is scarred by sin.

The need to exchange one thing for another is the effect of sin. This is the kingdom of Satan.

Contrast this with the Kingdom of God where he freely gave Adam every tree to eat from except for one to keep Him in remembrance. God blesses but adds no sorrows to the blessings (Proverbs 10:22). This is the glory of God (2 Corinthians 1:20).

We have all missed the mark; fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of many to the glorious Gospel of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Godly contentment is a great gain (1 Timothy 6:6-11).

One can suffer needlessly from a voracious appetite for material things (1 Timothy 6:10). Overnight, vast amounts of money can evaporate as if it had grown wings (Proverbs 23:5).

The fearful thoughts planted by Satan can nibble a person to death (1 John 4:18).

That same one can choose to trust God for provision (Matthew 6:33-34, Philippians 4:6-7; 19).

Satan defrauded from Adam the generous provisions of God for His beloved children and he is hoarding them. He is taunting us with lack by holding onto God’s abundance that is meant for us.

But thanks be to God our Father Who has given us the power of attorney to use the name of Jesus to take back from Satan what is rightfully and legally ours (1 Samuel 17:45, 2 Corinthians 1:20, Philippians 2:9-11, Ephesians 6:12).
